Coming of Age is a more common term for the style but the pure semantics of language have changed the meaning.  It is more than just the civilizing of youth but an interaction between the youth culture and society.  Coming of age novels show disillusionment with the society and how the youth can learn from the mistakes of their parents.  Woolf uses stream of consciousness to make her readers understand all sides of an argument.  If more people could see the world through someone else's eyes, there would be fewer wars.
