The Tarot is split into two parts, the minor arcane, which have become the playing cards we know today, and the Major Arcane. The Major Arcane are twenty-two cards numbered zero to twenty-one. Each is named with the first being the fool. As the fool travel through life, the structure of the Bildungsroman becomes apparent. The first cards are the Queen, King, High Priest, and Priestess as well as the Hermit and the Lovers. Each represents an archetype that he can aspire to. At the mid point in the cards is Death. It is often a emotional or spiritual death that can be seen as the collapse of preconceived ideals out of which more pure truths rise. The connection of the Major Arcane to Bildungsroman shows nor only the history of the style but how the plot itself is part of our struggle for understanding.
