Skalka, Krakow (c) AHGunkel

The Pauline Church and Monastery stands in the western Kazimierz district of Krakow.  Skalka, (the Rock) as it is called, is the supposed site of the martyrdom of St. Stansislaw, bishop of Krakow. St. Stanislaw, who dared to chasten the extravagent King Boleslaw, was beheaded at the site in 1079. An altar to St. Stanislaw stands in the left aisle of the remodeled Baroque church. At the altar is the block upon which he is said to have been beheaded. Underneath the church is a crypt, turned into a mausoleum for famous Poles in the late nineteenth century. Eminent artists, writers, and poets are buried there, including Krakow's own Stanislaw Wyspianski, composer Karol Szymanowskiand the medieval historian Jan Dlugosz. A sunken garden commenorating the Saint is found outside the church, dominated by a large statue of the Bishop and Martyr.
