What/Where is Ukrainian Village?
Ukrainian Village is a splendid Chicago neighborhood located on the Near NorthWest side in West Town. The Village is bordered by Wicker Park on the North, Humboldt Park on the West, "Grand Avenue" on the South, and East Village on the East. The hood is multi-ethnic, with the predominant populations split between Ukrainian and Polish Americans. These groups also share the area with Puerto Rican, Mexican, and African-American residents, in lesser numbers. The area boasts some of the finest Church architecture in Chicago, a tight neighborhood community, a wonderful selection of top-quality brick "Chicago two-flats," lovely gardens, and many local ethnic shops catering to Ukrainian and Polish customers. On the streets, in the churches, in homes and shops, Ukrainian and Polish are spoken. Chicago Poles refer to the area as Helenowo, after the Polish Roman Catholic anchor parish of the neighborhood.
